NICHES supporting climate change adaptation at ECCA 2023

26 June 2023

The 6th European Climate Change Adaptation Conference 2023 (ECCA) brought together 500 scientists, practitioners, and policy and decision makers from 19 to 21 June 2023 in Dublin, Ireland to discuss climate resilience strategies and share innovative tools. NICHES was amongst the projects and work presented, showcasing the potential of urban nature-based solutions (NbS) for climate change adaptation.

Organised by JPI Climate and the MAGICA project and supported by the European Commission, ECCA 2023 is considered to be Europe’s primer event on climate change adaptation. Its fundamental role is to inspire all key players at community, national, regional, and transnational levels to implement effective mitigation measures, especially in the face of increasingly frequent extreme weather events such as flooding, heatwaves and wildfires. This year’s conference featured interactive sessions, panel discussions, and a live streaming component for wider participation. It focused on several thematic topics, including nature-based solutions for climate change adaptation.

On 20 June 2023 Biodiversa+ and the BiodivClim Knowledge Hub took the floor for their session “Nature-based solutions for climate adaptation”. The session was kicked-off by Rita Sousa-Silva (BiodivClim & University of Freiburg) and Filipa Grilo (University of Lisbon, Portugal) with an introduction of the 21 different projects involved in the BiodivClim Knowledge Hub development, including NICHES under the representation of its coordinator, McKenna Davis. The all projects share a strong social and biodiversity component and represent terrestrial, arctic, urban, coastal and marine systems. NICHES, alongside UNaLab, Go Green Routes, BiNatUr, Just Nature and CONEXUS constitute the urban areas part of the hub. NICHES’ mission is to demonstrate the capacity of NbS to mitigate stormwater runoff, flooding and sewer overflow events for the benefit of aquatic biodiversity and society and highlight transformation pathways to deliver this potential.

Recordings from ECCA 2023’s plenary are already available to anyone interested in diving deeper into the climate change mitigation measures and learn from leading experts in the field. Hear more about the BiodivClim Knowledge Hub and other inspiring talks here:
