Members of the NICHES project attended the World Biodiversity Forum (WBF) in Davos, Switzerland. Held between 16 to 21 June 2024, the occassion gathered researchers across all disciplines of biodiversity science with practitioners and societal actors to explore how to move from science to actions and solutions to conserve biodiversity and set us on a path towards transformation for sustainability.
NICHES was showcased in a dedicated session titled "Understanding Urban Nature as a Social-Ecological-Technological System." The session was well-represented by consortium members, including the project coordinator Ulf Stein (Ecologic Institute), along with Tom Wild (University of Sheffield), Johannes Langemeyer (Autonomous University of Barcelona), and others.
The session focused on the potential of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to enhance climate resilience while delivering multiple benefits for society, biodiversity, and ecosystem services. It emphasised the need for a Social-Ecological-Technological Systems (SETS) approach to better integrate and understand the technical, ecological, and social dimensions of NbS in urban environments.
Through presentations and interactive sessions, the workshop explored how a SETS framework can support multidisciplinary research and transformative changes in urban water systems and environments.
